Logo design

Stilst created a new logo design for itself in 2021. What does it take to design a corporate logo? If you ask a layperson about graphic design, logo design will be the first thing that comes to mind. It is the most eye-catching visual of a company and a company can immediately give an initial direction towards what the company stands for. It is much about what type of feeling the company would evoke in people.

The name Stilst

Let’s start with the name Stilst. This name comes from what a successful interior stands is for Stilst: a calm haven in a frenzied world. We also felt it was important that the word be short and easy to pronounce in most languages. Furthermore, we liked the repetition of the first two letters at the end of the word.

Distinctively minimalist

When thinking about a new logo design, a few guiding principles came forth. Recognizability is, of course, the most important. In addition, we felt it should be a simple, minimalist logo to match the minimalist design of our furniture and interiors. The combination of distinctive and minimalist already creates an interesting framework for a graphic designer. Another feature we wanted to reflect was that our designs are just a tad different than usual. Because we design outstanding, distinctive furniture for a reason.

Name as a logo

In addition, we wanted the logo to be the Stilst name itself rather than a graphic next to or above the name. With a separate logo, the company name would always have to be added to know which company it is. Only for very large, global organizations would a logo without a company name be sufficient. So this meant that we had to look for the distinctiveness of the logo in the design of the letters. With the vast amount of logos in the world, this is quite a challenge for a designer.

Logo color

Another aspect is that we did not want to make our logo dependent on a color (yet). The reason is that colors are often trend-driven and we, on the contrary, stand for timeless design. That doesn’t mean the Stilst logo will never appear in color but for now it will remain in black and white. This also has an advantage for printing the logo on paper.

Recognizable symbol

Finally, we wanted part of the logo to be used as a recognizable symbol. In many applications, there is no space for a full company name and we will have to use something more abstract. For example, the favicons you see in the tabs of your browser, the round logo of our instagram and our linkedin account. These will also need to be recognizable. The favicons, for example, are only 16 x 16 pixels. Recognizability at that minuscule size is also an interesting task for a designer.

The Stilst logo

In the end, we succeeded in designing a logo that met all those requirements. Timeless, distinctive, simple, monochromatic and abstract. We designed the letters and spacing ourselves. We believe the logo has a fresh, understated quirkiness and is balanced in terms of composition. We are convinced that we can move forward with this logo for a very long time.
