It is where the black lava rock of the ancient Xitle eruption still surfaces through the gardens, The Artist is conceived as a house built around a painter’s life: her work, her guests, her dogs, and the daily rhythm of a Mexican home.

The house presents itself as a composition of monolithic volumes of pink cantera stone. A few orthogonal volumes slide and interlock, creating deep shadows and moments of compression and release. Windows are set deep within the thickness of the walls, their frames hidden, so each opening reads only as glass carved from stone. Against the black volcanic rock and the green of the garden, the warm pink of the cantera becomes the house’s quiet signature.

Arrival is deliberately slow. The garage stands as a separate volume, and between it and the house lies an enclosed entry courtyard: blind walls on either side, a strip of sky above, and the raw lava rock of the site underfoot. Light falls from above rather than through views. It is a space for pausing before entering.

Beyond the house, the rear garden opens up completely. Large floor-to-ceiling glass doors connect kitchen and living spaces to a garden of agave, maguey, native grasses and volcanic boulders, a place for everyday life, gatherings and exhibitions.

At the heart of the program is the studio. Lit from above by north light, it adjoins a small gallery linked to the kitchen, where work and hospitality meet. An abstract artwork, integrated into the facade itself, continues the Mexican tradition of art and architecture as one: a gesture towards what Mathias Goeritz called emotional architecture.

The Artist draws on the legacy of Luis Barragán, who founded Jardines del Pedregal, while seeking a more introspective, personal language: architecture that works on the senses and the emotions as much as on function.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_single_image onclick=”custom_link” image=”{“8038“:{“url“:“https://stilst.nl/villa-the-formalist/“,“title“:““,“target“:““,“rel“:““}}”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”8101″ img_size=”large”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text] The Artist Jardines del Pedregal is a neighbourhood located in the south west of Mexico-City.
